The Coup of Viseu

The New School of Viseu has been taken over by a crew of modernist architects from Porto and Lisbon in Fall 2004. This "coup" has been long secretely plotted by the direction of the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa and has caused a terrible shock among the students and faculty. The number of students have sharply dropped since then, and sadness and anger persist. The exemplary pedagogy set up by José Cornélio da Silva's team composed of Alvaro Barbosa, Ines Vaz, Lucien Steil, José Baganha, Helder Cerqueira de Sousa, Nuno Canelas, etc. has been replaced by mainstream Portuguese modernism.

Doctrine and Ideology have replaced convivial and humanist "Atelier" teaching and open and interactive learning processes. Katarxis wants to express its condoleances and to wish good luck to those who have decided to stay and resist and continue.
